True faith is suffused with penitence. And just as faith is not only a momentary act but an abiding attitude of trust and confidence directed to the Savior, so repentance results in constant contrition. The broken spirit and the contrite heart are abiding marks of the believing soul. -- John Murray
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise(Psalm 5:17).
But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word (Isaiah 66:7b).
