NEVER

God's government will never fail in any part of the world, in any event of life, or in any tumult of the nations. -- William S. Plumer

The LORD Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back? (Isaiah 14:27.)

A hymn to read, sing, play, hum, or whistle, to the glory of God:O Father, You Are Sovereign. Margaret Clarkson, 1982

CHASTENED

Let us learn like Christians to kiss the rod, and love it. -- John Bunyan.

My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives. (Hebrews 12:5-6).

A hymn to read, sing, play, hum, or whistle, to the glory of God: Through all the Changing Scenes of Life (From Psalm 34).

ADOPTED

We are adopted into God's family by the resurrection of Christ from the death in which He paid all our obligations to sin, the law, and the devil, in whose family we once lived. Our old status lies in His tomb. A new status is ours through His resurrection (Sinclair Ferguson).

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs --- heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him (Romans 8:16-17).

PURPOSE

God will never permit any trouble to come upon us unless He has a specific plan by which great blessing can come out of the difficulty. ---- Peter Marshall

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified (Romans 8:28-30).

GODLY FEAR

Christ can never be known without a sense of awe and fear accompanying the knowledge. No one who knows Him intimately can ever be flippant in His presence. ---- A W. Tozer

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:1-4).

PERSON

If there is any reality within the whole sphere of human experience that is by its very nature worthy to challenge the mind, charm the heart and bring the total life to a burning focus, it is the reality that revolves around the person of Christ. ---- A. W. Tozer

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him (Colossians 3:15-17)

OBEDIENCE

Jesus has spoken; His is the Word, ours the obedience. ---- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

....from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work (II Timothy 3:15-17).

Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever (Psalm 86:11-12).

TRUST

The more we know of God, the more unreservedly we will trust Him; the greater our progress in theology, the simpler and more childlike will be our faith. ---- J. Gresham Machen

My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandment with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding... (Proverbs 2:1-6)

PRAYER

Prayer is the very life-breath of true Christianity. ---- J. C. Ryle

On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us (Psalm 62:7-8).

Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full (John 16:23-24).

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

EVANGELIZE

You cannot evangelize in a doctrinal vacuum (Anonymous).

For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how are they to call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Romans 10:13-17).

HEAVEN

Heaven is not a conditional reward, but a consummated relationship. ---- John Blanchard

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself with be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away (Revelation 21:1-4).

JOY

Joy is the flag that is flown from the citadel of the heart when the King is in residence. ---- Anonymous

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. There my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:5-6, 8-9, 11).

UNTIL

The whole life of man until he is converted to Christ is a ruinous labyrinth of wanderings. --- John Calvin

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience ---- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of he body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath....  But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses , made us alive together with Christ...for we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:1- 5, 10).

REPENTANCE

We see "gospel repentance" in all those who, made sore by the sting of sin but aroused and refreshed by trust in God's mercy, have turned to the Lord. -- John Calvin

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what earnestness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! (I Corinthians 7:10-11).

GRATITUDE

Gratitude to God makes even a temporal blessing a taste of heaven -- William Romaine

Those blessings are sweetest that are won with prayers and worn with thanks. -- Thomas Goodwin

O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon His name: make known His deeds among the people. Remember His marvelous works that He has done; His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth...for He has remembered His holy promise.... (Psalm 105:1,5)

GODHEAD

Christ's humanity is the great hem of the garment, through which we can touch His Godhead. -- Richard Glover

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory,  glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:1, 14).

WAY

If the Father has the kingdom ready for us, He will take care of us on the way. -- Andrew Bonar

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also (John 14:1-3).

I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:8).

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).

CHANGE

In leaning over to speak to the modern world, I fear we may have fallen in.

It is a strange assumption for Americans to feel they already have the equipment necessary to comprehend the gospel without any modification of lifestyle, without any struggle -- in short, without being born again. The point is not to speak to the culture. The point is to change it. God's appointed means of producing change is called "church"; and God's typical way of producing church is called "preaching."
-- William H. Willimon, in CHRISTIANITY TODAY, May 19, 1997.

And let us consider  how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some... (Hebrews 10:24).

"For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." But how are they to call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are  they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? ...so faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Romans 10:13-17).

POWER

The fact that Jesus Christ is to come again is not a reason for star-gazing, but for working the power of the Holy Ghost. -- Charles Spurgeon

And while they were gazing into heaven as He went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven (Acts 1:10-11).

If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory (Colossians 3:1-4).

In Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit(Ephesians 2:22).

WRATH

The real horror of being outside of Christ is that there is no shelter from the wrath of God. --- Eric Alexander

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him (John 3:36).

WORLD

If God is not our joy, we develop an insatiable desire for the "good things,"  frantically and foolishly searching for them in this world. -- pgs.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world -- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does -- comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever (I John 2:15-17).

HELP

Religion should cover all experience, finding expression in prayer or praise as the occasion may demand. We have a God for all seasons. Both in periods of suffering and trouble, and in times of joy, prayer and praise alike acknowledge that He is sufficient. -- J. Alec Motyer.

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise If any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray....  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and affective (James 5:13-14).

PRAYER

True prayers are like those carrier pigeons which find their way so well; they cannot fail to go to heaven, for it is from heaven that they came; they are only going home. -- C. H. Spurgeon

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time need (Hebrews 4:14-16).

LEADING

Even if all men are liars and faithless, still God does not cease to be trustworthy. -- John Calvin

WILL

It should be the aim of every Christian to have his will directed by the will of God as revealed in Scripture. -- Sinclair Ferguson

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil (Proverbs 3:5-8).

ECHO

"We love Him because He first loved us." Love is like an echo, it returns what it receives. ---- Thomas Manton

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins (I John 4:8-10).

We love Him because He first loved us (I John4:19).

HOLINESS

We do not suddenly become holy in one moment by making Christ Lord; we are to be holy moment by moment because He is Lord. -- John Blanchard

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." (I Peter 1:14-16).

JOY

Joy ceases to be joy when it ceases to be "in the Lord".  -- J. Alec Motyer

I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices: my flesh also shall rest in hope. Thou wilt show me the path of life; in Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:8-11).

STUDY

We being what we are and all things else being what they are, the most important and profitable study anyone of us can engage in is without question the study of theology. - A. W. Tozer

FORGIVENESS

In these days of guilt complexes, perhaps the most glorious word in the English language is "forgiveness." --- Billy Graham

FLESH

The work of God cannot be done in the energy of the flesh. Too much religious activity is just old Adam in his Sunday clothes. ---- Vance Havner

But we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh (Philippians 3:3).

HEART

The keeping and right managing of the heart in every condition is the great business of the Christian's life. ---- John Flavel

And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart (Deuteronomy 6:5-6).

The LORD is nigh unto those who are of a broken heart; and saves those who are of a contrite spirit. (Psalm 34:18).

Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23).

My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise (Psalm 112:7)

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

PRAYER

Sometimes we think we are too busy to pray. That is a great, mistake, for praying is a saving of time. - C. H. Spurgeon

And Asa cried to the LORD his God, "O LORD, there is none like You to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on You, and to Your name we have come against the multitude. O LORD, You are our God; let no man prevail against You." So the LORD defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah... (II Chronicles 14:11-12).

FEEL

Jesus Christ is not only the Son of God mighty to save, but the Son of man able to feel. ---- J. C. Ryle

Therefore He had to be like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because He Himself has suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted (Hebrews 2:17-18).

SANCTIFICATION

Sanctification is progressive; if it does not grow it does not live. ---- Thomas Watson
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20).
But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world is has been crucified unto me, and I to the world (Galatians 6:14).

WAY

Holiness is not the way to Christ; Christ is the way to holiness. -- Adrian Rogers

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God (Philippians 1:9-11).

WICKED

The wickedest enemies of God are only axes and saws and hammers in His hands, and are ignorantly His instruments for doing His work in the world. -- J. C. Ryle

The LORD has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble (Proverbs 16:4).

For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. So then He has mercy upon whomever He wills, and hardens whomever He wills (Romans 9:17-18).

NECESSITY

Let this be a firm principle: No other word is to be held as the Word of God, and given place as such in the Church, than what is contained first in the Law and the Prophets, then in the writings of the apostles; and the only authorized way of teaching in the Church is by the prescription and standards of His Word. ---- John Calvin

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit... (I Corinthians 1:212:13).

Man shall not live alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

...from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work (II Timothy 3:15-16).

RAISED

Since Christ, our Head, has ascended to heaven, we should leave our carnal desires behind and lift our hearts upward to Him. ---- John Calvin

KINDNESS

Sow kindness; reap good memories. ---- pgs

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me." Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God (Romans 15:6-7).

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends(I Corinthians 13:4-8a).

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you(Ephesians s4:32).

STEWARDSHIP

There is no portion of our time that is not God's time; there us no portion of money that is our money, and the rest God's money. It is all His; He made it all, gives it all, and He has simply trusted it to us for His service. A servant has two purses, the master's and his own, but we have only one. ---- Adolphe Monod.

Everything is from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your hand (I Chronicles 29:14).

One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Luke 1610-13).

WORLDLINESS

That this world is a playground instead of a battlefield has now been accepted in practice by the vast majority of fundamentalist Christians. ---- A. W. Tozer.

If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own, but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you (John 15:18-20).

HOLINESS

There is not a brick nor a stone laid in the work of our sanctification, till we go to Christ. Holiness is His special gift to His believing people. Holiness is the work He carries on in their hearts by the Spirit whom He puts within them. He is anointed a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance as well as remissions of sins. ---- J. C. Ryle

To as many as receive Him, He gives power to become sons of God (John 1:12).

LOVE

Love does not say, 'Give me', but 'Let me give you'. ---- Jill Briscoe

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his  only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (I John 4:7-11).

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me (Matthew 25:40).

REPENTANCE

Repentance is not....
     ....merely feeling sorry (without hating sin);
     ....merely feeling disgusted (without turning from sin);
....merely fearing hell (without fearing God).

Repentance is....
....a change of one's view of sin (II Corinthians 7:10).
....a change of one's feeling about sin (Psalm 51:2,10, 14).
....a change of one's will and purpose regarding sin (Psalm 51:5, 7, 10). ---- pgs

EVERYTHING

If the service of God is worth anything, it is worth everything.  -- Charles Spurgeon

If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. ...anyone of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple(Luke 14:26-27, 33).

SACRIFICE

Consecration is resolution that is not afraid of sacrifice. -- Anonymous

When the days drew near for Him to be taken up, [Jesus] set His face to go to Jerusalem (Luke 9:51).  (Cf. Isaiah 50:7)

[Jesus said] "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised" (Luke 9:21-22).

Father, the hour is come; glorify Your Son that the Son may glorify You, since you have given Him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him" (John 17:1-2).

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said..."It is finished," and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit (John 19:28, 30).
